When Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in August 1990, the United States and its allies deployed troops to the region to protect other Iraqi neighbors and prepare to retake Kuwait, if necessary. The aircraft carrier USS Saratoga was among the ships deployed as part of Operation Desert Shield. One of the commanding officers in charge of Operation Desert Shield addressed the crew of the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga in 1990 as the carrier lay in wait in the Persian Gulf, proclaiming that "the world community is not going to stand for Saddam Hussein's treacherous acts".
