Offered in 0 more formatsIn 1993, Yasser Arafat, leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), negotiated for several days with Israeli foreign minister Shimon Peres and Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin regarding the ongoing conflict between the PLO and the Israeli government. The leaders eventually co-signed the Declaration of Principles on Interim Self-Government Arrangements, which became known as the Oslo Accords. The agreement provided for limited Palestinian self-government in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip; in return, the PLO recognized Israel's right to exist as a nation. For their role in negotiating peace in the Middle East, Arafat, Peres, and Rabin were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994.
