After enduring the hardships of World War I, many U.S. citizens wished to return to a easier life. Warren G. Harding, then a Republican Senator from Ohio, capitalized on this sentiment and campaigned on the promise that he would return the United States to a peacetime status and economy. Harding undertook a "front-porch" campaign from his home in Marion, Ohio where he put his talents as a public speaker to good use, making grand rhetorical speeches that took no stance on controversial subjects. Harding handily beat his Democratic opponent, James Cox, in the Electoral College by a margin of 404 votes to 127.
