In the 1940s the television industry in the United States began to take its first major steps toward becoming a fixture in American living rooms. Television technology was rapidly advancing from its start in the 1920s, and several radio conglomerates, such as the Columbia Broadcasting Company, saw a profitable future in the new medium. By the 1950s television had emerged from a novelty to a central part of American culture.
