During World War II the U.S. government offered war bonds to citizens who could redeem them after a fixed period of time for a higher return. While war bonds constituted only a fraction of funding for the war, they directly connected the public to the war effort. Hollywood stars toured the United States, performing at free events as part of a campaign to boost bond sales and public morale.
