Nearly three months after D-Day, on August 24, 1944, French tanks under the direction of Major General Jacques Philippe Leclerc rolled into Paris in order to liberate the city from German occupation. Two days later General Charles de Gaulle, leader of the Free French Forces, led a victory parade through the city. The success of Operation Overlord - the Allies' codename for the recapture of mainland Europe from the Nazis - marked a major turning point in World War II.
