The Unites States tested the first atomic bomb in a remote section of the New Mexican desert on July 16, 1945. Known as the Trinity Test, the first atomic bomb was raised on a 120-foot tower while government observers watched the top-secret test from a distant, secured location. J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the lead designers of the bomb, was stunned at the power of the blast. News of the successful test was immediately radioed to President Harry S. Truman, who had hoped to create the weapon before the Soviet Union did. U.S. pilots later dropped two atomic bombs on Japan in August 1945.
