In 1942 Japan invaded the Philippines, which had been a U.S.-controlled territory since 1898. After debate regarding how to handle Japan's hold on the Philippines, in January 1945 U.S. troops invaded to retake the islands. In August 1945 the Japanese surrendered, and on July 4, 1946, the Philippines became an independent nation.
