Jewish Immigrants Arrive in Palestine and Members of the Stern Gang Are Arrested Ca. 1946Unknown - 1946
A mandate by the League of Nations in 1920 gave England reign over Palestine. Jews from around the world had moved to Palestine in mass migration waves in 1882, 1904, 1919, 1924, and 1933. At the end of World War II, the United Nations (UN) proposed to divide Palestine into two countries; one for the Arabs and one for the Jews although this plan was rejected by the Arabs. When the British mandate expired in 1948, the Jewish community in Palestine declared its independence as the state of Israel. Zionist terrorists known as the Stern Gang perpetrated violent acts against Arabs and Britons in Palestine in an attempt to oust the British ruling government. Although many Jews in Palestine also wanted an independent Jewish state, the vast majority did not approve of the actions of the Stern Gang.
