Amazing. I love star trek so much!!! Kirk, Spock and McCoy are super cool!
Technical Note: The Portland library's ownership hub-ring stickers on "Side 2" (of this and all of the other TOS seasons) obscure the DVD's BCA code -making EVERY OTHER SIDE unreadable by any DVD player. The BCA (Burst Cutting Area) is the "lead-in" on a DVD and without it, the player cannot read the CPRM/ID and will simply eject the disc. So here's a free tip: Either stop buying dual-sided DVD media and switch to single-sided, dual-layer media, or use a smaller hub-tag, :(
The first; the best; the only, all spruced up.
Wonderful to see the original series that set off the Star Trek craze. Although the costumes, sets and role of women may seem dated, we have to remember that all that was revolutionary for its time. Gene Roddenberry was a visionary who saw our future as positive - unified Earth where not all "aliens" are menacing. Also, his imagination in coming up with "beaming" people to the planets, tricorders, and communicators were way ahead of his time. Lastly, I loved the remastered works. The colors are vibrant. It's nice to see the detail of the planets and stars, and the Enterprise looks very slick. The only reason I didn't give this 5-stars is that the audio in the beginning was badly remastered. According to the interview in "Bringing Star Trek into the 21st Century", they used a live orchestra of similar size and makeup to perform the original score and tape it live. They then added the original voice over by William Shatner. Unfortunately, the result is that his voice sounds like its in a distant tunnel and much too low in volume compared to the music. For all the work that was done, they should have done a better job on equalizing this audio introduction. Also, some of the DVD's were so badly scratched that I had to skip over sections of several episodes.
To one who grew up with The Next Generation (TNG), the original Star Trek is quite a disappointment. Episode after episode features a teenage boy's wet dream of a female who tries to seduce the captain, doesn't develop plot ideas beyond a trivial level, and relies on mysterious equipment failures to keep the show dragging on until moments before the end. TNG is better produced, has more and better actors, and its plots have far more depth and variety.
What a fantastic season one! Excellent casting; interesting and entertaining plotlines. It's hard to believe this show is 45 years old. It's a real credit to the vision and creativity of Gene Roddenberry. The 21st century touch-ups were very well done and didn't detract from the series at all. Highly enjoyable. I'm really looking forward to watching season two!
A good remastering of the original series. If you are a fan of Star Trek, you will not be disappointed. Although the production appears dated, the magic of the original concepts still come through in vivid colour. Given that the original series was created over 40 years ago, the science fiction concepts were sound and still hold true today. This has allowed the concept of Star Trek to morph into the various new series throughout the past 20 years.
