The globe-hopping, biennial conference is devoted to research in aluminum, magnesium, titanium, and titanium aluminides. In addition to scientific aspects such as mechanical properties, corrosion, and processing innovations, the 120 or so papers consider applications in aerospace, automobiles, medicine, and other fields. Sociological and computational materials science issues are also addressed. Other areas are cast and wrought alloys, novel forming technologies, microstructure and properties, corrosion and surface modification, and environmental challenges. Among specific topics are applying Lorentz force velocimetry to open channel flow, materials science and engineering opportunities for an energy-efficient and low-carbon economy, fatigue crack growth in ultrafine grained aluminum alloy, predicting microstructure and mechanical properties in aluminum castings after heat treatment, the environmentally assisted cracking of magnesium alloys, and how adding iron to aluminum affects the structure and properties of wires used for electrical purposes.
