Explores urban Jamaicans' idealization of the self in the world and compares and connects it with the idealism of the central philosopher of the Enlightenment, Kant. Examines the open-endedness of Jamaican social life and looks at how Jamaicans search out satisfying forms of community within the extended networks into which they are tied. Explores this process at the level of the self, suggesting ways in which Jamaicans use certain narrative patterns to find a place for the self in relation to the displacements of everyday life. The author is a research fellow at Queen's University in Northern Ireland. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
