Attar's work includes a collection of lives of saints, two collections of lyrical poetry, and a fairly long series of didactic and narrative verses. Among the ideas he finds are the unquenched drive for knowledge, renunciation of the world and asceticism, God's mercy and kindness, the relationship with animals, and extinction and the union with divinity. The German original, Meer der Seele, was first published in 1995. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
