During the reign of Emperor Otto the Great (962-973), Hrotsvit was a canoness in the German convent Gandersheim who wrote Latin poems, stories, plays, and histories. This collection of 13 contributions offers close study of her world, the context of convents and culture in Ottonian Germany, her theology of virginity and continence, characteristics and problems of her writings, and enduring issues such as virginity and other sexualities and male-female dialogue. The two editors are affiliated as follows: Phyllis R. Brown (associate provost, Santa Clara U.; co-editor of another work on Hrotsvit and on women writing Latin) and Stephen L. Wailes (emeritus, Germanic studies, Indiana U.). Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Hrotsvit wrote stories, plays, and histories during the reign of Emperor Otto the Great (962-973). Twelve original essays survey her work, showing historical roots and contexts, Christian values, and a surprisingly modern grappling with questions of identity and female self-realization.
