A slightly skewed take on gods and creation and ordinary people. The book cover grabbed my attention as did the artwork.

I could happily stare at Dave McKean's artwork all day, so he is the reason I picked up this book and I expected to like his contribution. In the reading, though, I learned that David Almond has given him marvelous words to work from, and the two complement, supplement, and expand each other's parts of this tale. It's an original (semi-)creation myth, and I think I like it better than most of the traditional creation myths I've encountered. This is one to revisit time and again, because I'm sure I'll discover new dimensions each time I choose to dwell in it.

"When the gods create a safe, calm world and settle into a lazy routine of self-contentment and admiration, young Harry, Sue and little Ben struggle with feelings of emptiness and begin building imaginative innovations from everyday materials, sparking the fears of their creators."
