The book is good but definitely not science fiction per se. Yellowstone Park becoming a supervolcano is the only science link. Mostly the book is a fiction novel about relationships, marriage, kids in college.

Excellent extrapolation of possible events in the first year after the world-wide disaster: tens of millions dead or dying and (for most of North America) an economy equivalent to Haiti, but with a polar climate. To see what an American might have to do about 60 years later, read "All the lives he led" by Frederik Pohl. P.S. In the following decade 1-3 billion dead from starvation, exposure and war before a new world stability ( based in Asia) is formed.

If you're familiar with the structure of many of Turtledove's books, this one will seem familiar. I like it, but anticipate a year-long wait for ( my guess ) Supervolcano:Aftermath, and another for ( I hope ) Supervolcano:Recovery.

The characters are generally likeable and interesting as the author takes them through the lead-up and first year or so of the aftermath of the Yellowstone hot-spot's revitalization.

I would hope that the US government's blindness to the warning signs is simply a plot device, but Katrina suggests that it is a reasonable assumption.

Not a bad book but it got bogged down in minute detail of side issues. Didn't really have an end to the book, it just stopped. Didn't wrap up the scenario.

I,m slightly dissappointed with this book. I/ve read some of his other series, The War That Started Early, Colonazation, World War, and found them quite entertaining. It seems to me that he just mailed this one in.
