Blackwell North Amer Karen Slocombe isn't sure why she visited the supermarket that day - as a committed member of the Food Chain Group and a regular stall holder at local farmer's markets. SuperFare is a place she would normally avoid. Luckily for Karen, she leaves moments before a bomb explodes, destroying the front of the store. Only a few days later, whilst manning her stall at Bradbourne Farmer's Market, Karen finds herself in the midst of another horrific crime. Peter Grafton, a fellow stallholder, is murdered in front of her - shot through the neck with a crossbow bolt. Despite the attack taking place in a busy town centre, no one saw anything suspicious and the motive appears to be a complete mystery. When friends from the Food Chain Group start warning Karen not to tell the police certain details, her suspicions are instantly aroused. Could the two events be linked? Are Karen's friends involved? And why is everyone suddenly talking about genetically modified crops? For former policeman, Den Cooper, life as a social worker doesn't quite compete with the thrill of solving a murder. Along with his girlfriend, Maggs, and the Slocombes, Den soons finds himself involved in a complex and emotional mystery filled with dark family secrets.
