The book was pretty good but there was soo much cussing and it kind of gets predictable so I gave up after giving it a second try with the second book.

Books like this one is why I read Young Adult Lit and love it. A novel that can make me laugh, gasp, cry and question themes of life and death. The main character Jem sees numbers when she looks at people and it isn't until, at the age of six, she discovers her mother dead of an drug overdose that she realizes the numbers she sees are people's date of death. Can you imagine trying to live while knowing when everyone else is going to die? It has made Jem's life hell. She distances herself from forming relationships while growing up in the foster care system. Then against all she's done to protect herself, she starts to trust and care for Spider, a tall, gangly black boy who is making some bad decisions but just wants to enjoy life. Also, Spider's date of death is fast approaching. An adventure at the London Eye goes terribly wrong, prompting Jem and Spider to go on the run. As they try to make it to the seaside with the police on their trail their relationship deepens and for once Jem has cause to hope. I won't give away spoilers for the ending but it's exhilarating, crushing, and hopeful. The setting, all the way from London to the seaside, are vivid and I felt I was right along with Jem and Spider. Both of these characters has such a strong voice I cannot help but invest in them. Thank goodness there will be another book (when you read the last line you'll know why)!

this book was fabulous!!!!!!!! i really enjoyed reading it. it was the first and it really captivated my attention. i felt pity for the character of Jem because she has to see the numbers. the end i thought was predictable nut i was astonished as Ward created new twists and turns even towards the end!!!!!!

Fifteen year old Jem has been seeing numbers all her life, only understanding what they meant when her mother died from drug overdose. The numbers she sees upon looking into people's eyes are their date of death. Written off as an outcast and "problem student" Jem and her newfound friend Spider end up taking off in a stolen car with the hopes of starting somewhere new.

Jem can see when people are going to die. It started with her mother, even as a young child Jem could see numbers when she looked at people but only on the day her mother overdosed did she realize that the number was the date that person was to die. Now caught in the system, at a school that doesn't care Jem tries to stay away from people. She avoids looking at or talking to anyone else and at all costs she doesn't want to get attached. She knows that she can't have friends or relationships while knowing how long those people have left on this earth.

That is until Jem accidentally befriends a guy from her class, Spider. Skipping school one day, Jem and Spider head to the London Eye. While looking at the tourists waiting in line for the ride, Jem begins to realize something horrible is going to happen. All of the tourists have the same number and the date is today. Grabbing Spider, Jem runs from the Eye and makes it a few blocks before one of the pods explodes. Witnesses remember Spider and Jem at the scene and now they are wanted criminals on the run. To top it all off, Spiders date is just a few days away. Can Jem escape the police and save her friend's life in time?
