Praised everywhere as a stunning work of reportage, TAKEOVER lays bare a hidden agenda, three decades in the making, to allow the White House to wield enormous powers, unchecked by Congres or the courts--an agenda that links warrantless wiretapping and Bush's judicial nominees, torture and Cheney's energy task force, the faith-based initiative and the imprisonment of citizens without trial. TAKEOVER tells the story of how a group of true believers, led by Cheney, set out to establish near-monarchical executive powers that, in the words of one conservative critic, "will lie around like a loaded weapon"for any future president.

Baker & Taylor
A critical investigation into how the Bush-Cheney administration has worked to increase presidential power at the cost of democratic constitutional balance reveals a range of questionable executive practices, from wiretapping and conservative judicial nominations to torture and imprisonment without trial. Reprint.

Book News
While much of the rest of the national media was looking the other way, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Savage (Boston Globe) was doggedly digging into the George W. Bush administration's efforts to accumulate more and more power in the executive branch while avoiding accountability from the other branches of government. In this volume, he details numerous facets of "executive quasi-coup" of the Bush years, including the use of presidential "signing statements," extensive use of the states secret privilege, legally redefining torture, warrantless wiretapping by the National Security Agency, the dubious theory of the "unitary executive," the president's ability to declare individuals "enemy combatants," attempts to sideline the military's Judge Advocates General, and manipulation of scientific information for policy reasons, to cite a few. For this new edition, Savage adds an afterword discussing developments since spring of 2007, when the original manuscript closed. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

In 2010 the GOP took the intentional step, a dictatorial tactic, of focusing on state legislature elections in order to produce voting district gerrymandering to insure a level of "representatio" far, far above the actual popular vote.

Which is how the GOP won control of the House in 2012.

Which is how Democrats received more than TWO MILLION MORE votes for Senate positions in the 2014 elections... and yet lost several seats!

Which is why primary Founding Father was such a strong proponent of direct elections.
