At sixty-three a woman is not supposed to be a nuisance. But when Lucy Fletcher is left a beautiful house on an unspoiled coast of Greece by famous archaeologist Oliver Lussom, her family assumes she will sell it, not use it. Lucy's family is in a state of flux: Her son has just left his wife; her daughter is thinking of taking Holy Orders; her teenage granddaughter is consumed by the turmoil of adolescence - and all of them assume their needs will be met by Lucy's customary motherly noises and embrace.
But Lucy's thoughts are elsewhere. She remembers Oliver Lussom's smile - she was nineteen, he much older - and the time when, plucked from school and her mother's graveside, she arrived in Greece, a timid girl. She decides to return to the house with its big cool rooms and terraces leading down to a beach of pale sand and the cobalt sea. It's time, she thinks, that she did something...extreme.
Soon the members of her family will step back from the disarray of their personal battles and begin to notice the profound change that has affected their mother. They will find everything subtly altered, as the other lives of their mother's past begin to imbue her present with new life.
