Probably one of the best crime novels of the last twenty years. This book transcends the genre to paint a detailed portrait of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. It delivers a moving description of the physical catastrophe and the erosion of the social fabric that keeps people at one remove from anarchy. It also points a large "j'accuse" finger at all levels of government and the more economically fortunate of New Orleans citizens for the way in which the poor of the city were abandoned by those upon whom they relied.
