As Handa and her friend Akeyo, young members of Kenya's Luo tribe, search for her grandmother's missing hen, Mondi, they find increasing numbers of interesting animals but the black hen eludes them.

Handa is searching for her grandmother's black hen, Mondi, with her friend Akeyo. While searching they find all sorts of other animals. Finally they hear a cheeping noise, and there under a bush, is Mondi with ten brand-new little chicks.
