Wonderful set of stories, with dry wit and out-loud laughing humor. Great in audio, with the English accents intact. A slower paced book, somewhat old fashioned, but really adorable.

I listened to this book on CD. I really liked it although it took me a while to get into the story. Mortimer, the raven, is taken in by 5-year old Arabel's family when he is hit by a motorcycle driven by robbers. Arabel instantly falls in love with her raven. Mortimer is very loving toward Arabel, but loving him is difficult for the adults in the story--to start with, he is a raven and acts like a raven, pushing things under the linoleum and squawking, "Nevermore" at odd (but appropriate) intervals. More worryingly, he eats the everything, including the stairs in Arabel's home and the escalators in the nearby tube station.

It's a nice, gentle book probably for girls at about a 3rd grade reading level. Perhaps more importantly, the book I listened to had three separate stories, all of the above except "Mortimer and the Sword Excalibur," so it's a good choice for children who don't have long attention spans. The stories are combinations of mystery, off-beat situations, and realistic emotions. In the end of each, Mortimer and Arabel are involved in solving the mysteries and everyone goes home happy.
