January 27[1982]: Caicara, Orinoco River, Venezuela
"We had a magical experience as we left camp this morning. Several big toninas [fresh water dolphin] were swimming along in front of us, half watching us as we stroked. Every so often, one of them would break away from the rest and power towards us, jumping into the air a few feet from the canoe and doing a complete somersault, sending a high spray of water over us. A second or so later, a delicate rainbow would appear out of the spray and hang for several seconds before disappearing" (248).

I read this book years ago, and re-read it again a couple of years ago. It is by far one of the most exciting and informative biographical stories I have ever read. I need to buy a new copy because, of course, once you loan out your own copy, it quickly gets passed on from reader to reader...
I would have to agree with the other comments. I read this many years ago, and still think of it alot. It is an amazing adventure and an amazing book. I own this and would be very careful about lending it out, as I wouldn't want to lose it. Due for a re-read in the near future!
This is an amazing adventure story. The adventure part is astounding, when you read about both the trials and triumphs of this father and son team it leaves you breathless. What I really appreciated is that 1) they found a good editor to help bring the book together from Don Starkell's diaries, and 2) there was a lot of honesty, so that the whole book wasn't gushing all the time about how wonderful the adventure was. The honesty took this book from a great adventure read to a fascinating read, for me. I couldn't put it down.
