This is the 3rd Straub novel I've read, all in the last year, and I've decided that my general view of his work is that it's readable but pedestrian. The "horrors" he evokes tend to be halucinatory and imbecilic, not really frightening to me. He can certainly tell a story, and he seems truly interested in doing justice to his characters and settings, and that's all good.
