Learn what goes on inside your dog's mind and develop a positive, fulfilling relationship with your best friend. "Dog Whisperer" Cesar Millan is America's most sought-after dog-behavior expert, but he is not a trainer in the traditional sense--his expertise lies in his ability to comprehend dog psychology. Tracing his own journey from a clay-walled farm in Mexico to the celebrity palaces of Los Angeles, Cesar recounts how he learned what makes dogs tick. Here, he shares this wisdom. Cesar's formula for a contented and balanced dog seems impossibly simple: exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order. Whether you're having issues with your dog or just want to make a good bond even stronger, this book will give you a deeper appreciation of how your dog sees the world, and it will help make your relationship with your beloved pet a richer and more rewarding one.--From publisher description.

Not sure why it's taken me so long to finish this book. It's not a long book, it reads pretty easily, and (for the most part) I'm on board with what Millan has to say. It may be that a part of me knows that I'm not following all his advice when it comes to our dog. Yes, Wiener Schnitzel the dachshund thinks, I'm pretty sure, that he's the pack leader in our household.

One of the few things that bugs me is that Millan doesn't always give concrete instruction on how to do some of the things he recommends. For instance, he says you should always enter or leave the house before your dog. Ok, but *how* do you do that? How do you get through the open door, then hold it open while the dog comes through, all while holding the leash?

For the most part, though, I did find plenty of explanations as to why my dog does some of the things he does, and suggestions on how to work on some of those issues.

Five Stars! As a lifetime dog owner and pack leader of three dogs, this book was an extraordinary reminder of our role to having more balanced dogs. I have appreciated the growth from dog trainers and the dog psychology revealed in this book has only improved my relationship with my dogs. This is not a "how-to" book. There are tons of training books. This book is a necessary base for any subsequent training. Keep running and walking those dogs and being a leader 100% of the time!

His methods use punishment and other tactics that will scare and hurt dogs. That certainly does not help them be happy. To really help your dog be happy and well behaved, look for books and videos by trainers like Karen Pryor,
Patricia McConnell, Jean Donaldson,
Kathy Sdao (From Tacoma!), Jane Killion. Here is a great website with free positive videos. http://dogmantics.com/free-video-list/

Though I have never own a dog, I found this book to be quite educational on the subject of a dog's mind and nature. I have seen the TV shows and, I find it remarkable what Cesar can do for problem dogs with only his years of hands-on experience to guide him.

This guy needs to get with the times. People are crazy over this man and shouldn't be.

Good reminder of some basics. Exercise first, then discipline, then affection.
Easy read, easy to understand, and good advice that is easy to apply.

Interesting approach to dealing with dogs, but more practical information is required.
