This family is lovely. Rich and kind, thoughtful and warm. They are a family that enjoy each other's company and respect everyone within it. Even the children are given voice and listened to.
This book is the pre-WWII setting, building the familial relationships, getting ready for what we know will come. The setting is peaceful, yet watchful as War looms but hasn't yet arrived.
The story focusses a lot on the children. They are the true starting point of this series.
I look forward to continuing the story of this warm, enjoyable family.

Agree that until at least halfway through the book I had trouble keeping up with the characters , but as a fan of Downtown Abby I loved the look at the absurd life of this era in England. Will try to read the next before I forget who's who!

This is a sprawling family saga set in the late 1930s, focusing on three generations of a wealthy family, the Cazalets. It's probably a good rec for Downton Abbey fans, and a good readalike for fans of Penny Vincenzi's Spoils of Time trilogy, but, while I enjoyed this and thought it was pretty good, I thought it had a couple of problems. First of all, it has so many characters that it loses focus - it's hard to keep the characters straight, and the author would have been better served by focusing on just a few. Secondly, the wide focus means that several storylines are taken up and then abandoned without explanation -- although it IS the first in a series, so that might resolve itself later on. It's an enjoyable, light summer read, and I'm hoping that reading further volumes will resolve some of my lingering issues with it, as I know this series is rather beloved in the UK.
