Twenty-four-year-old Sally Lockhart, a single mother in Victorian England, goes on the run when she receives a letter from a man she has never heard of claiming to be her husband and demanding custody of her young child, but she finds help in the person of Daniel Goldberg, a Jewish political writer who believes a shadowy figure known as the Tzaddik is behind Sally's troubles.
