This book takes place in an alternate version of the Napoleonic Wars where dragons exist and are used in warfare. A British navy captain, William Laurence, captures a French ship and finds a dragon egg inside. This egg quickly hatches and…

Such a wonderful reimagining of our world with dragons! Set during the Napoleonic Wars, what if dragons were intelligent, talking creatures who aided humans in their society and wars? Mostly, this is a lot of fun. I rated it 4 of 5 stars…

Interesting and entertaining story of human/ dragon bonding. Nothing spectacular but still has fun action. Alternate title is "Temeraire". And gets dramatically more complex as the series progresses.

A thoroughly enjoyable story of a captain in the British navy during the Napoleonic Wars who finds his life unexpectedly altered forever when his ship captures an enemy ship and finds a dragon egg in the hold- an egg that's about to hatch.…

Napoleonic combat but with dragons - If you like all of the elements of British class drama, action oriented combat, and layer of fantasy over the top of it all, this is your book. The first in a series, but stands alone just fine. I…

Exciting series especially for those who appreciate military maneuvers. Agree with the comment about Horacio Hornblower. A teeny, tiny, minuscule thing that didn’t seem to fit (and I hate to mention it at all): Laurence calls the dragon…

The Napoleonic wars have always fascinated me, but the added element of dragons really made this book for me. I loved this book, especially the characters. I really liked the innocent yet powerful vibe I got from Temeraire and the…

Written as a stand-alone novel, Novik couldn't resist expanding her concept into a series. The alternative universe here is a faithful depiction of the era of the Napoleonic wars, with credible descriptions of battle tactics, strategy, and…

I loved Uprooted and Spinning Silver, so I was excited to discover a whole series of Novik's books to read on a long vacation. The Temeraire series was quite a disappointment. While I enjoyed the characters of Laurence and Temeraire, and…

Imagine if Wellington and Napoleon fought each other with dragons! Seriously, it’s an alternate universe in which the Napoleonic Wars are fought using dragons. It’s everything I didn’t know I wanted in a book, until I started reading it.

Give me Napoleonic wars and dragons any day. I loved this book and can't wait to read more of the series.

So I’ve had this on my TBR for quite some time, but picked up the audiobook from my local library. The story is basically the Napoleonic Wars with the fun addition of dragons (which make everything better). A ship’s captain, Will Laurence,…

The first book of the “Temeraire” fantasy series, a combination of C.F. Forester’s Horatio Hornblower and Anne McCaffrey’s Pern, but with its own originality. The series takes place in the Napoleonic Wars, but with both sides having…

Dragons instead of navies in the Napoleonic wars — that’s the short version. It’s paced well, has an extensive cast of characters and makes you believe in a dragon-y world of “what if...?”

Book 1 of the Temeraire series. This book is great for fantasy fans and fans of alternate histories. I’m actually not a big fan of either, but I still LOVE this series. I found the premise very intriguing – what if dragons had existed…

I liked this book but I honestly felt that not much happened.

This was fun, and although a military historical fantasy novel, it was still lighthearted at times! I wouldn't rush into the next one, but I would definitely read more set in this world. I want to get to know some of the other captains and…

I'm not much of a fantasy reader in general, but I absolutely LOVED this book, the first in a 9-book series that reimagines the Napoleonic wars as fought by talking dragons and their human handlers! I'm a sucker for books that nail the…

I honestly love this series. I would recommend this for teens or adults. A beautiful mix of nautical, historical, and dragons. For me this got me very interested in the time period. Also from a genealogical stand point learning who our…

Such an enjoyable book. It really got me excited for the rest of the series. The relationship Laurence and the dragon, Temeraire, have is developed in such a fun way. It is a historical fiction of the Napoleonic Wars, but with Dragons!!…

I am not a fantasy enthusiast, but this was very enjoyable! The first chapter was a bit hard to get through, but after that, the relationship between man and dragon was very compelling. I am going to read the rest of the series with joy…

This series is so amazing. Full of action and adventure, but plenty to think about too. I'm now on the fifth book and they have all been excellent. Now my 13-year old son is reading them. I think they are fine for teens. There is a small…
